DIY Valentine's Day Fine Motor Skills Craft

We use our fine motor skills every single day, from getting dressed to eating to writing. Fine motor skills require the control of small muscles in our hands. These muscles can be strengthened and improved each day. Not only are these important skills to develop for daily activities but they also include a host of other benefits such as improving academic readiness and fostering independence. Doing developmentally appropriate activities with our children can boost their self-esteem and confidence in accomplishing future tasks that they are faced with.

Crafts can be a special time to bond with your child as well as a fun and creative way to develop fine motor skills. Such activities like using child-safe scissors, drawing, or painting all enhance the use of these skills. This Valentine's Day help your child develop fine motor skills by making a simple heart-covered bag. After you have created your bag, have your child fill it with some of their favorite things that make their heart happy.

Step 1: Gather the materials.

2 paper plates

Hole punch

Colored Paper

Step 2: Cut the top off of each plate to make a straight edge.

Step 3: Place the plates together so the insides face each other. Then use the hole punch to create holes along the outer edges of the plates.

Step 4: Cut your colored paper into different sized hearts.

Step 5: Glue the hearts onto the paper plates.

Step 6: Put the plates together and string your ribbon through the holes, connecting the plates to make a bag.

Step 7: Have your child collect their favorite items or books and put them in their newly created Valentine's Day heart bag.

Crafts can be an amazing way to spend time with your child! Take some time this week to make this simple heart-covered bag. Show us your creations by posting on your social media pages and tagging us @helpmegrowutah.
