My baby is going to start teething soon! What should I expect?
Teething is a new experience for many parents, and oftentimes it can be a hard one. The symptoms and timeline of teething can be found here. So let’s get started!
Each baby is going to have a different experience when it comes to teething. Some struggle through the teething process and others come out with hard-to-notice symptoms. For babies that do have a hard time, common symptoms may include: increased drooling, possibly reduced appetites for solid foods, biting and chewing, gum rubbing, and irritability. These symptoms could lead to a disrupted sleep schedule. It can be confusing for babies to not understand why they are in pain.
Sometimes there can be symptoms that could occur at the same time as teething, but are not a symptom of teething. For example, a fever is not a symptom of teething. For more information on these unrelated non-teething symptoms check out the Health Line website! If you are ever worried about your baby, reach out to your pediatrician.
When can I expect my baby to start teething?
Not every baby will get their teeth at the same time, every baby is different. Some babies have even been known to be born with a tooth! Typically they can come in as early as 3 months old but others might not come in until your baby is 12 months old or older.
Below is a general guideline for when you can expect each tooth to begin its move into your baby’s mouth.
Typically around 6 months is when your baby’s first tooth will come in, starting with the Lower Central Incisor. Next to follow could be the Upper Central Incisor coming in around 8-12 months.
Upper Teeth Timeline
Upper Central Incisor – 8 to 12 Months
Upper Lateral Incisor – 9 to 13 Months
Canine – 16 to 22 Months
First Upper Molar – 13 to 19 Months
Second Upper Molar – 25-33 Months
Lower Teeth Timeline
